As a reminder, there is no meeting this Monday, 18 JAN, due to
schools being out in honor of Martin Luther King Day. We will
have a PLC meeting this Wednesday, 7:30 at the Scout House.
All who are going on the ski trip this weekend (Friday, 22 JAN
at midnight thru Saturday midnight) should have already turned
in their money and completed paperwork for Ski World. If you
have not yet done so please stop by Ski World directly; ensure
you inform them you are with the Troop 63 Group trip. Also drop
an e-mail to Harry Lustig, who has helped organize this trip, to
let him know that you’ve added your name to the list. Buses
will be departing Friday night from the commuter lot at I-64 and
Indian River Road.
Our next troop event is the visit to Baltimore, the weekend of
5-7 FEB. We’ve decided to try something new this year from the
usual visit to Washington DC. We’ll be staying at the Old
Otterbein United Methodist Church, an historic church located a
few blocks from the Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore.
Activities planned for the weekend include a visit to the
National Aquarium and several other museums (Babe Ruth
Sportsmen’s Hall of Fame, Train Museum, Children’s Museum, etc.)
dependent on boys’ desires following the Aquarium visit.
Everything is within walking distance of the church. The
deadline for signups is at the meeting next week. Adults, we
will need drivers as well – please sign up!
For parents of Scouts, please encourage your son to sign up in
the Green Book well in advance of trips. In an attempt to
accommodate changing schedules and to encourage as much
participation as possible, we have traditionally made the cutoff
date two Monday-meeting nights prior to a weekend trip and
wherever possible have added Scouts desiring to participate up
until the event itself. However, we have seen a trend of boys
consistently signing up too late, or changing their minds at the
last minute, which creates problems in planning for adult
drivers, food, etc. This is especially problematic when a young
Scout purchases food for his patrol and then has two or three
members of his patrol cancel at the last minute. If there is
any question of whether your son has committed to a trip or not,
you’re welcome to check out the Green Book at any meeting on
Monday night.
The full schedule through the end of this year’s plan (October
2010) is on the Troop 63 website at
http://www.troop63capehenry.com/schedule.htm.
Permission slips for troop activities are also on the website,
under the “Forms” link.
Best regards,
Steve Cade

Dear Contingent Crew Member:
For all those who attended the meeting at Blue Ridge
Mountain Sports last week, I hope it was helpful.
Keep in mind that if you buy anything from Blue Ridge, you can
receive a 10% discount with you BSA membership card.
This also applies to WildRiver Outfitters but only on cash purchases.
I recontacted Blue Sky Adventures to get a new quote on
17 people participating in the New Mexico High Adventure tour 13-14 July
prior to Philmont. The all
inclusive price per person is $590 (includes transportation to and from
Phimont), $40 per person over the original quote for 20 people.
The owner of the tour company explained the additional cost is
primarily to cover his cost for transportation which is spread over fewer
people. To tentatively make a
reservation, I will need all contingent personnel with the exception of the
Burgesses and Cunningham to respond with you current intentions to
participate in this tour. If the
number is less than 17, the price per person will continue to rise, e.g. 15
people is $620 per person. The
first two attachments provide information on the tour and accommodations.
To participate in the majority of the tour on the 13th,
we need to arrive Albuquerque no later than 12:45 PM.
All contingent members should plan on departing Albuquerque
International Airport after 1:00 PM on 27 July. Please start looking at
flights and let everyone in the contingent know what your intentions are.
We will need to do this so the those scouts that do not have a parent
going to Philmont can plan to travel with an adult leader.
Our next meeting will be held at Francis Asbury United
Methodist Church at 7:30 PM 18 February.
The focus of the meeting will be on preparing for Philmont and
finalizing the training schedule responsibilities.
I am trying to get the DVD "Preparing for Philmont" but the Philmont
Trading Post is sold out at the moment.
If you know who or how I can get this DVD, please let me know.
Also at the meeting I will collect a $100 deposit per person for
those participating in the Blue Sky Adventures tour.
Additionally, I will need to collect $235 per person to be put
towards the balance due for Philmont registration.
Make you check payable to BSA Tidewater Council.
Dan, please let everyone know if this is incorrect.
Lastly, I have attached a calendar of events and the
PowerPoint presentations from our first two meetings.
The presentation from 10 December contains the crew assignments we
agreed upon at that meeting.
Sincerely,
Van
